Is Your Organization Considering Implementing SharePoint?

March 12th, 2009 · No Comments · Uncategorized

I used SharePoint during my professional work experience at Brisbane Catholic Education.  There was a lot of discussion back then on whether or not SharePoint’s shared document libraries would be suitable for electronic document management.   The EDMS suitability issue still exists, however, a recent report co-produced by AIIM and Information Architected revealed that over 47% of the survey respondents’ primary use in SharePoint is file sharing.   The report answers many questions on SharePoint implementation, including:

  • Can SharePoint be successfully deployed enterprise-wide?
  • Is it best suited for particular applications, or capable of addressing all of an enterprise’s content management needs?
  • Does it have particular functional strengths and weaknesses?

Anyone can obtain a free copyof the report from Information Architected if interested.

To catch up with Google, Yahoo  and other affordable  web hosted services, Microsoft recently announced their beta Software as a Service Trial for Microsoft Exchange, SharePoint, Live Meeting and Communications Online.  The offering looks tempting for small to medium sized companies that are currently paying excessive IT costs to maintain their systems.  The big question on a switch over to a MS SaaS  platform is the level of support offered when a program included in your package has a major hiccup.  And here’s another revelation - the trial is not included in Australia.  For more commentary on this development, see Mary-Jo Foley’s posting from the ZDNet’s All About Microsoft blog.
